Trump becomes a key figure in the NYC mayoral race as Democratic candidates argue about how to oppose his agenda.

Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is in a competitive race with former governor Andrew Cuomo as they both attempt to distance their campaigns from Trump’s policies.

This week, both politicians revealed plans aimed at shielding New York City from federal interference, especially following Trump’s deployment of the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles to counter anti-immigration protests.

Mamdani, who is gaining traction as a democratic socialist, has proposed a “Trump Proof” Sanctuary City Plan. His plan includes a significant $224 million funding boost for legal defense and the establishment of abortion services, among other initiatives.

At a recent press conference, he emphasized the need for “fiscal independence” from the federal government, arguing that his proposed $10 billion tax increase would help achieve this goal. Queens lawmakers have indicated that this tax could generate more than $1 million, primarily funded by raising the corporate tax rate to align with New Jersey’s 11.5%.

However, there has been no clarity on whether the details of Mamdani’s tax plan have been fully explained, nor how these funds would address potential shortfalls from federal cuts under Trump’s administration.

Meanwhile, Cuomo has initiated his own response plan to prevent future federal actions against New York. His proposal outlines legal oversight for the NYPD to adhere to sanctuary laws, the establishment of first aid stations at protests, and partnerships with local organizations to maintain peaceful demonstrations.

Cuomo’s team has not yet provided information on the financial implications of his own plan. In a statement, he emphasized the importance of learning from events in Los Angeles to avoid past mistakes.

In a bit of competitive banter, Mamdani took a jab at Cuomo, suggesting that the former governor would compromise with Trump on immigration issues. “We need someone who will challenge Donald Trump. Cuomo seems willing to welcome Trump’s forces into our city if it benefits his campaign,” Mamdani remarked.

Cuomo’s spokesperson, Rich Azzopardi, defended his candidate, claiming that Cuomo has a proven history of confronting Trump. He dismissed Mamdani’s achievements in the legislature as minimal, noting that he had only passed three bills during his time in office.
