Trump berates DC bishop who delivered National Prayer Service sermon

President Trump on Wednesday slammed “mean” Democratic bishops who preached at a national prayer meeting, but acknowledged church leaders were sending a political message.

President Trump was furious after having to sit out Tuesday's service in which the Bishop of Washington, D.C., the Rev. Marian Edgar Budde, turned it into a rant about illegal immigrants, refugees and the LGBT community.

“The so-called bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Meeting Tuesday morning was a radical left-wing hardliner who hates Trump,” President Trump wrote on his Truth social account shortly after midnight.

Pastor Marian Edgar Budde called on President Trump to “extend mercy” to illegal immigrants, refugees, and the LGBT community in a sermon delivered at the National Prayer Conference on January 21, 2025. Reuters

“She brought her church into politics in a very unscrupulous way,” he said, adding that she did so in a “disgusting” tone that was “neither persuasive nor wise.”

He emphasized that the bishop called for “mercy” to be given to immigrant families “whose children fear their parents will be taken away.”

“She failed to mention the large numbers of illegal immigrants who have entered our country and killed people,” Trump wrote.

“Many were coming from prisons and psychiatric hospitals. It's a huge crime wave happening in the United States.”

Trump, who sat expressionless during Tuesday's service, complained that “in addition to her inappropriate comments, the service was very boring and uninspiring.”

“She is not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology!” he wrote.
