Trump’s Allegations Against Senator Schiff
On Tuesday, President Trump accused California Senator Adam Schiff of being involved in mortgage fraud, referring to him as “stolen on trial.” This claim follows a report from Fannie Mae’s financial crime division suggesting Schiff might be engaging in a series of fraudulent activities regarding his mortgage.
Trump expressed his long-standing suspicions about Schiff’s character. “I always suspected Shifty Adam Schiff was a fraudster,” he remarked, adding that Schiff claimed his main residence was in Maryland but lived in California while serving as a lawmaker, possibly to secure a lower mortgage rate. Trump pointed out that Schiff refinanced his Maryland property back in 2009, asserting this was part of a fraudulent scheme.
He stressed the seriousness of these allegations, demanding that justice be served. According to senior officials, the federal housing agency overseeing Fannie Mae has referred the matter to the Department of Justice for further investigation.
During this controversy, Trump noted that Schiff might face scrutiny every time he makes a mortgage payment, which could lead to more detective work on the matter.
Schiff, who previously chaired the House Intelligence Committee, has been a vocal critic of Trump, often leading investigations into Russia’s connection to him. He also played a significant role in Trump’s 2020 impeachment trial related to Ukraine. In a response posted to X, Schiff denied any wrongdoing, describing Trump’s claims as a politically motivated attack.
“This unfounded attempt at political retaliation will not deter me from holding him accountable,” Schiff stated, defending himself against what he calls weak allegations. A spokesperson for Schiff added that those who financed his mortgages were fully aware of his living arrangements and that both homes were not holiday residences.
This mortgage issue involving Schiff first gained traction in a CNN report in 2023. The distinction of Schiff’s home designation is crucial, as it designates his Maryland property as his primary residence.
The federal housing finance agency, led by Bill Prute, declined to comment on the situation. In a related matter, New York Attorney General Letitia James, another critic of Trump, won a significant civil fraud ruling against him last February concerning alleged mortgage fraud involving real estate in Brooklyn and Virginia. Trump has labeled James as “a complete con man” at a public event in May, amidst growing investigations, including a formal probe by the FBI.
James has dismissed the allegations against her as politically motivated.
