Secretary Burgum Addresses Vandalism at National Mall Amid New Threats

Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum is speaking out about a troubling trend of vandalism at the National Mall, which has notably impacted the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. He outlined the ongoing restoration initiatives, deployment of security, and the recent arrests of seven individuals linked to the incidents. Burgum emphasized that these acts are a direct affront to the nation, promising full prosecution under the law.

In related news, President Trump, along with the Department of the Interior, celebrated what they referred to as America’s 250th victory over algae at the Lincoln Reflecting Pool. On Sunday, Trump shared a photo on Truth Social showcasing the clear waters and the Washington Monument, while also issuing “wanted” posters for those responsible for the vandalism. He called for public assistance in identifying individuals connected to the destruction of government property concerning the Reflecting Pool.

Additionally, Trump shared a statement from the Interior Department that lauded the use of “advanced nanobubbler technology” and praised the National Park Service’s cleanup efforts. In a letter shared with Burgum and others, Greg Wisher, assistant secretary of the Interior, described the effectiveness of this technology in eliminating persistent algae problems that have plagued the pool since 1922, especially highlighting issues during previous reopenings.

Photos displayed by Trump illustrated a clear reflecting pool and the Washington Monument under a bright sky, underscoring the recent maintenance efforts. Wisher pointed out that the National Park Service is actively vacuuming up dead algae from the bottom, a necessary step after refilling the pool.

“Vacuuming is the final maintenance step and should wrap up soon,” Wisher noted, indicating that the area closest to the Lincoln Memorial has already been cleared, revealing the distinct blue bottom of the pool.

Burgum remarked that despite some acts of vandalism, they are all treatable and will be resolved shortly. He noted that the Reflecting Pool is a significant success, representing the celebration of 250 years of American history, with approximately 340 million people engaging in these festivities.

Addressing concerns about potential costs associated with repairs, Burgum acknowledged the vandalism as an unexpected setback. “We couldn’t have anticipated that a small group would result in damage to a prominent American landmark,” he stated, referring to long-standing issues of vandalism at the Reflecting Pool. He also mentioned that the pool might not require complete draining to address the damage, suggesting that localized repairs could suffice.
