Trump declares the withdrawal of federal funds from sanctuary states and cities

Trump Announces Funding Cuts to Sanctuary Cities

President Donald Trump has stated that he plans to cut federal funding to sanctuary cities and states starting in February, claiming these jurisdictions harbor criminals and contribute to crime and fraud. This decision comes amid a broader immigration crackdown taking place across the nation.

During a speech at the Detroit Economic Club on Tuesday, Trump criticized sanctuary cities for allegedly fostering crime and violence, arguing that they prioritize the protection of criminals over the safety of American citizens. This announcement reflects an escalation of his earlier commitments during his first term, now targeting entire states rather than just specific cities.

“Starting February 1st, we will not make any payments to sanctuary cities or states with sanctuary cities because they are doing everything they can to protect criminals at the expense of the American people,” Trump stated.

The U.S. Department of Justice has identified sanctuary jurisdictions in 12 states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington, along with the District of Columbia.

Some notable sanctuary cities include:

  1. Albuquerque, New Mexico
  2. Berkeley, California
  3. Boston, Massachusetts
  4. Chicago, Illinois
  5. Denver, Colorado
  6. East Lansing, Michigan
  7. Hoboken, New Jersey
  8. Jersey City, New Jersey
  9. Los Angeles, California
  10. New Orleans, Louisiana
  11. New York City, New York
  12. Newark, New Jersey
  13. Paterson, New Jersey
  14. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  15. Portland, Oregon
  16. Rochester, New York
  17. Seattle, Washington
  18. San Francisco, California

In a related matter, U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian issued a temporary restraining order that halted the Trump administration’s plan to freeze approximately $10 billion in funding for various programs, such as child care subsidies. This ruling came in response to claims that the freeze would cause immediate harm to the five affected states and raised questions about its legality.

This announcement has intensified existing tensions between liberal officials and immigration enforcement, with recent clashes occurring in cities like Minneapolis and Portland. While Trump did not specify the exact federal funding being cut, it’s anticipated that areas like transportation, housing, education, and public safety may be impacted.

As an additional complication, a federal judge blocked the Trump administration from cutting child care funding to five states, including Minnesota, following concerns over alleged fraud.

Liberal leaders have criticized the plan as “unconstitutional,” arguing it infringes upon states’ rights and may constitute conditional mandatory spending.

Already, some states, particularly Minnesota, have taken legal action against immigration enforcement efforts, and further cases are expected. New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani has reinforced his commitment to protecting immigrant rights and maintaining the city’s sanctuary status.

Trump accused Minnesota Governor Tim Walz of corruption, claiming that the state’s leadership is failing to address significant wrongdoing in an alleged $9 billion scandal.

“Minnesota has a lot of scammers, and we have stopped payments associated with them,” Trump remarked. “It’s a great state. It was a great state. Now it’s being destroyed by that stupid governor.”

As of Wednesday, the White House had not provided detailed information regarding this funding cut initiative. However, this policy aligns with Trump’s previous immigration reform promises. If enforced, it would compel jurisdictions to either modify their policies or seek alternative financial resources.
