Trump Administration to Deploy Troops to Portland
On Saturday, President Donald Trump revealed that his administration plans to send troops to Portland. This move aims to safeguard Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities from attacks by extremist groups, particularly ANTIFA, which Trump recently classified as a significant terrorist organization.
Trump communicated this decision via a social media post where he emphasized his directive to Pete Hegseth, naming him as the operational leader. The announcement follows a request from Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem.
In his post, Trump stated, “I allow full power if necessary.” Meanwhile, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed that U.S. service members are prepared to support the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) operations in Portland at the president’s command. “The department will provide information and updates as they come in,” he assured.
A deputy secretary of DHS pointed out that both Trump and Noem are taking decisive measures to restore law and order after weeks of riots targeting ICE facilities, alongside attacks on law enforcement. The official noted that numerous individuals connected to left-wing extremist groups have already been apprehended for their violent actions against both law enforcement and civilians across the country.
The statement also included, “We will not allow terrorists from Antifa to hinder our efforts to ensure America’s safety.”
In a previous post on September 17, Trump called Antifa “a dangerous and radical left disaster,” officially designating it as a “major terrorist organization.” This classification came after multiple violent acts linked to this ideology.
A recent release from DHS highlighted that they have made significant arrests in recent months, targeting left-wing extremists responsible for various attacks and riots.
The department specifically mentioned incidents where a mob in Portland surrounded and attacked the ICE processing center. They reported on three specific events of violence against ICE in Portland that occurred in late June—a time marked by heightened protests against immigration enforcement in cities like Los Angeles.
Portland has been known for its strong leftist political stance, having a Democratic mayor since 1993, with all city council seats held by the same party.
The local group, Rose City Antifa, also infamous for its attacks, gained notoriety in 2019 for the brutal assault on journalist Andy Ngo during a protest. Reports indicated that the group has publicly shared personal information about ICE officers, including home addresses, and has sent death threats to agents and DHS officials.
The White House has not responded to requests for comments regarding these developments.
