Trump encouraged to confront Xi about China's backing of Iran to lower gas prices

President Donald Trump has a significant chance to contribute to reducing costs for Americans during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to Brian Mast, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee from Florida. Mast pointed out that China plays a major role in the rising cost of living for Americans, especially regarding fuel prices. He placed blame on China’s support of Iran amidst its ongoing conflict with the U.S., which has adversely affected global trade by effectively closing off the Strait of Hormuz.

Mast noted, “If President Trump can ensure that China halts its military support for Iran, which is trying to disrupt this crucial oil passage globally, he would make a meaningful impact on affordability—particularly concerning global oil prices, which ultimately influence pump prices here in the U.S.”

As cost of living concerns take center stage in the upcoming November midterm elections, both political parties are accusing each other of enacting policies that drive up everyday expenses for Americans. Gas prices, in particular, are a contentious issue, with the U.S. conflict with Iran cited as a factor in escalating oil prices. Currently, the national average for a gallon of gas stands at about $4.47, showing an increase of over 30 cents since early September.

Mast declared that China is likely a primary factor contributing to these price hikes through its support of conflicts involving both Iran and Russia. He expressed that Trump’s meeting with Xi presents a crucial opportunity to address China’s backing of Iran’s military actions.

“China is providing arms to Iran, allowing them to launch attacks indiscriminately against civilians navigating through the Strait,” Mast said, contrasting this with the U.S. efforts to protect vital resources and civilian lives in the region. He highlighted that, in recent months, Trump has successfully moved over a billion barrels of oil and thousands of merchant ships through the strategic waterway, despite Iran’s lack of similar movement.

On the topic of what leverage Trump might possess to influence Xi regarding Iran, Mast referenced the sanctions bill signed into law by the president, which targets both Russia and Iran. “China stands out as a key target under that bill,” he said. “It could significantly impact trade if President Trump decides not to exercise his waiver authority regarding the sanctions.”

Thursday’s summit will be Trump’s third meeting with Xi since taking office this term, and notably, it will be Xi’s first visit to the U.S. since Trump returned to the White House last year.
