Trump feels hopeful about addressing crime in D.C. following a federal intervention that led to nearly 400 arrests, including 135 undocumented immigrants.

Trump’s Crime Crackdown in Washington, D.C.

President Donald Trump claimed that Washington, D.C., is becoming a safer place following his order for a federal initiative to tackle crime in the area, which has one of the highest homicide rates in the country.

Reports indicate that three significant homeless camps have been dismantled without any issues.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump accused local government officials of inflating crime statistics to give a misleading perception of safety. He asserted that the reality is much grimmer.

He stated, “This is a very bad and dangerous thing to do, and they are under serious investigation for so doing! Until 4 days ago, Washington, D.C., was the most unsafe ‘city’ in the United States, and perhaps the World. Now, in just a short period of time, it is perhaps the safest, and getting better every single hour! People are flocking to D.C. again, and soon, the beautification will begin!”

Trump’s declaration followed his choice to temporarily federalize the Metropolitan Police Department and deploy the National Guard to address crime in the capital.

This operation has already faced legal obstacles, as the attorney general of D.C. has filed a lawsuit, arguing that the federal takeover breaches the Home Rule Act. Local leaders, including D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, have questioned both the necessity and legality of this move.

So far, Trump’s initiative has led to nearly 400 arrests, with around 135 of those being illegal immigrants and 21 illegally obtained firearms confiscated. The head of the MPD union called the federal response a “critical stopgap” amidst a crime surge but insisted it should only be temporary.

House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed support, saying, “President Trump is RIGHT. We can’t allow crime to destroy our Nation’s Capital.”

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that the administration is committed to “relentlessly pursue and arrest every violent criminal.”

The arrests include the 135 illegal immigrants purportedly associated with gangs, as well as those with prior violent crime convictions. A single day of joint law enforcement activities led to 52 additional arrests, including 28 illegal immigrants and the confiscation of three firearms.

Stephen Miller, White House deputy chief of staff for policy, noted, “We have seen a record number of violent offenders, bad guys, gang members and all kinds of threats to public safety removed off the streets as well as their illegal weapons that they’ve been using to terrorize the citizens of this city.”

He also mentioned the dismantling of over 70 homeless encampments and the removal of long-standing gang graffiti with the help of the National Park Service.

Attorney General Pam Bondi, who played a key role in shaping the legal framework for this federal effort, praised the initiative on social media. She mentioned, “Washington, DC is getting safer every night thanks to our law enforcement partners. Just this weekend, 137 arrests were made and 21 illegal firearms were seized. In total, there have been nearly 400 arrests—and we are not slowing down. We are committed to making DC safe again!”
