Trump feels increasing pressure as Greene aligns with MAGA supporters criticizing Israel over Gaza.

Supporters of former President Trump’s base have started expressing concerns about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, urging the administration to take action. This has highlighted some divides among supporters regarding their views on the situation.

Notable figures, such as Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), Rep. Lance Gooden (R-Texas), and podcast host Theo Fong, recently raised alarms when Trump addressed the reality of “real hunger” occurring in Gaza.

This rising apprehension among Trump’s base underscores the administration’s strong ties to Israel and raises questions about how Trump might respond to the need for assistance in Gaza.

A source close to the White House commented, “When it comes to Gaza assistance, we need to be cautious of Hamas’ attempts to criticize the humanitarian situation both in the U.S. and Israel. Trump is trying to resolve this conflict, but his next steps are uncertain.”

Trump remarked on Monday that the statements made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were “not particularly so,” suggesting he agreed with the idea that starvation was not occurring in Gaza, despite the devastation caused by the Israeli conflict with Hamas. He noted that the U.S. would increase its role in providing food to the region.

“It’s hard to say anything other than it’s terrible, unless you’re completely detached,” Trump said on Tuesday, referring to disturbing images of hungry children.

However, Trump indicated that Israel would be primarily responsible for facilitating food deliveries to Gaza, despite criticism that Israel’s embargo on Gaza has contributed to worsening conditions there.

Trump stated, “They don’t want Hamas to exploit resources. Israel is skilled at handling this.”

The United Nations-related group dealing with food security has labeled the situation in the Gaza Strip as dire, emphasizing the severe hunger crisis currently unfolding.

While Trump’s messaging around Gaza presents a serious humanitarian issue, it also shows a level of respect for Israeli control over the situation, which contrasts with views among his supporters.

Prominent podcast host Joe Rogan, who had a significant audience during the 2024 election and previously featured Trump on his show, shared candid thoughts on the Gaza situation. Similarly, Fong, another influential podcaster, urged leadership to take stronger action to support Gaza.

Gooden, a Trump ally, posted on social media, “Ending ties with Israel requires eliminating all Hamas threats while also ensuring the wellbeing of children in Gaza.”

Greene, a high-profile supporter of Trump, took to social media to express her views on the Gaza situation, recognizing the horrors of October 7 in Israel but also acknowledging the crisis in Gaza. She became the first GOP lawmaker to refer to the events there as “genocide.”

Greene has been involved in online discussions with fellow House member Randy Fine (R-Fla.), where she pushed back against claims that people in Gaza are facing starvation.

In one post, Fine asserted, “There’s no starvation. Claims regarding ‘Palestinians’ are misleading.” Previously, he had said he would prioritize the release of hostages over addressing the needs of Gaza.

Greene responded critically, stating, “It’s irresponsible to call for ongoing suffering of innocent people. His comments only serve to fuel more anti-Semitism.”

However, it remains unclear if the growing critique of the hunger crisis in Gaza signifies a shift in sentiment within Trump’s base regarding Israel and the broader Middle East.

A recent Gallup poll indicated a decline in U.S. support for Israeli military actions in Gaza, dropping to 32%, a 10-point decrease since September. Interestingly, Republican backing for Israeli operations has increased from 66% to 71% during the same timeframe.

Support for Israel has traditionally been a fundamental aspect of Republican foreign policy, with many within the party advocating for Israel’s right to act against Hamas following the deadly attacks on October 7, which claimed approximately 1,200 lives, contrasting sharply with Hamas’ reports of significant Gazan casualties.

Trump has proclaimed himself the most pro-Israel president, remaining staunch in his support, even as tensions rise regarding how to handle the situation.

Rumer, who previously identified as openly Islamophobic, has had discussions with both Trump and Vice President Vance, and has criticized the mechanisms for aiding Gaza, deeming the reports of starvation as “false.”

In summary, members of Congress should refrain from endorsing what she termed “Palestinian propaganda,” Rumer stated.
