Trump May Be Cutting Dirty Foreign Policy Deal Like Reagan Did with Iran Hostages

On Bloomberg’s “Balance of Power” on Friday, Rep. John Garamendi (D-Calif.) suggested that former President Donald Trump, a potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate, is making some kind of deal akin to “what happened to Jimmy Carter when President Reagan and his military made a deal with Iran.”[ian] They dumped the Ayatollah and left Jimmy Carter there.”

“If we’re going to do cognitive tests, let’s not do kindergarten-level cognitive tests like Trump always says. If we’re going to do cognitive tests, of course we should do both,” Garamendi said. “But I would like to see Donald Trump stand in front of the international press, like Biden did yesterday, and answer questions, I would like him to answer detailed questions about international relations and national security, and I would like him to explain to the international press why during his four years as president, he has dismantled NATO and handed power to Putin. I remember the press conference in Helsinki, I remember what happened there, and with Russia invading Ukraine, we should all be aware of what’s going on.”

He continued, “By the way, who did Trump meet with yesterday at Mar-a-Lago? He met with Orban. Who did Orban meet with a week ago? Putin. Isn’t it interesting that Orban met with Putin and then met with Trump? What are these two dealing with now? What are they up to? What should we look forward to? I remember very well what happened to Jimmy Carter when Reagan and his military made the deal with Iran.[ian] “You took down the ayatollahs, you left Jimmy Carter there. And then what happened three months after Reagan became president? Well, there was the Iran-contra agreement. That’s what we had. So what is Trump going to do? What is Orban going to do? We need to ask those two guys that question.”
