Trump: No Taxes on Tips and Overtime Demonstrate GOP's Support for Workers

Trump Positions Republican Party as the Champion of the Working Class

WASHINGTON—President Trump asserted that his initiatives, such as tax-free tips and overtime pay, reflect the Republican Party’s shift toward representing the interests of working-class Americans. This comes as millions of people express support for these policies during this tax season.

His remarks were made while responding to inquiries from Breitbart News on the South Lawn of the White House, just before heading to Las Vegas for a roundtable discussion on tax exemptions related to tips.

“Do your policies, like eliminating taxes on tips and overtime, suggest that the Democratic Party is no longer the party of the working class, and that the Republican Party, under your leadership, is stepping into that role?” a reporter asked.

Trump enthusiastically embraced the question, saying, “I love this question.” He continued with, “The Democrats have lost their way. They aim to tax everyone out of business. They advocate for men in women’s sports and oppose voter ID laws. They’re just lost.” He added that Americans benefitted significantly from tax returns, often receiving refunds much larger than expected.

The tax exemptions for tips and overtime are part of Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which includes credits for U.S.-made car loans and Social Security benefits for eligible seniors. During a press conference, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that over 53 million Americans have applied for at least one exemption from this legislation.

As of Wednesday, more than 6 million individuals claimed the tip deduction, over 25 million claimed the overtime exemption, and around 30 million seniors utilized the Social Security credit, according to the White House.

Bessent remarked that he often receives appreciation for these policies from waitstaff throughout Washington, D.C. “I might be the most favored Cabinet member among service workers in the area. When I visit, doormen, bartenders, and waitstaff express their gratitude for the non-taxation of tips,” he said. He shared an experience from a diner in Westchester County, emphasizing the positive feedback about the initiative.

“While we can’t provide specific numbers just yet, we anticipate revealing more data soon. Initial figures suggest around 52 million people have taken advantage of at least one of these options, and we expect many to utilize multiple exemptions,” he highlighted, underscoring that the policy is aligned with an “America First” approach.

“Working Americans, particularly small businesses, retain more of their earnings,” he noted. “Previously, critics argued these measures only benefited the wealthy, suggesting tax hikes for those earning above $500,000, which poses a significant threat to small enterprises,” he concluded.
