Trump Reaffirms No U.S. Troops for Ukraine
Former President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that, if he were to regain office, he wouldn’t deploy U.S. troops to safeguard Ukraine’s borders. “You have my assurance,” he expressed during an interview on “Fox & Friends.”
He emphasized his motivation is to prevent loss of life, noting that Ukraine faces significant casualties in an “outrageous war” that, he believes, wouldn’t have escalated under a different presidency. Trump mentioned his aim is to establish a more comprehensive dialogue ahead of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Interestingly, Trump remarked that Europe has a considerable role in providing security assurances to Ukraine. He mentioned that Ukraine isn’t eligible for NATO membership, but several European nations are willing to offer NATO-like protections.
Regarding relations between Zelensky and Putin, Trump noted, “They weren’t exactly best friends.” However, there seems to be some improvement, as he explained, “Maybe they’re doing a little better than I thought.” He had set up a meeting between the two leaders, although he had initially considered a trilateral meeting.
Reflecting on his past experiences, Trump claimed he successfully mediated seven wars but found the Ukraine conflict to be particularly challenging. “I thought this was one of the easier wars. This turned out to be the toughest one,” he stated.
His remarks came shortly after a significant gathering with Zelensky and various European and NATO officials. Following this, Trump had discussions with Russian leaders to advance the peace process aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
