Anti-ICE Protesters and Federal Agents Clash in New Jersey
There have been significant confrontations between anti-ICE protesters and federal agents at a detention facility in Newark, New Jersey. Democratic lawmakers, notably Senator Andy Kim, have voiced their support for undocumented immigrants who are currently on hunger strikes protesting their conditions. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has asserted that the protesters are engaging in political theatrics and has countered the hunger strikers’ claims. They cited incidents where immigrants with serious criminal histories were arrested.
During a Cabinet meeting, President Donald Trump referred to the demonstrators outside Delaney Hall as “fake” and “paid.” He defended the detention center, claiming it to be one of the best facilities of its type worldwide.
These comments followed a week of protests, where detainees and their families criticized overcrowding, unsatisfactory living conditions, and insufficient medical care. Senator Kim noted that some detainees have initiated a hunger strike.
The situation intensified when Representatives Daniel Goldman and Jerrold Nadler were permitted entry into the facility amid growing scrutiny regarding the conditions inside.
Protesters Clash with ICE as Demonstrations Persist
Protests outside Delaney Hall commenced on Friday and have continued over the week, resulting in chaos, including direct confrontations between protesters and ICE officers. Demonstrators attempted to obstruct vehicles from entering and leaving the facility on Sunday night.
On Monday, tensions escalated further when police used tear gas to disperse crowds and forcibly removed protesters. Video footage captured scenes of officers tackling one protester and dragging another away from the entrance.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin defended Delaney Hall’s conditions while dismissing critiques from detainees and Democratic officials.
Ongoing Concerns Over Facility Conditions
Marin, a DHS representative, remarked, “This is not a Holiday Inn,” when addressing concerns regarding the facility. He also criticized officials who have publicly voiced their opinions outside Delaney Hall, including Senator Kim, who claimed to have observed degrading conditions during a recent visit.
In a rather unexpected comment, when asked about Kim being subjected to pepper spray, Marin stated, “I’m sorry, but I probably shouldn’t have been there.” Kim later reported that he witnessed the detainees receiving spoiled food and expressed concerns about the conditions within the center.
“The detainee handed me a carton of milk, and it was just solidified. I mean, it was totally disgusting,” Kim recounted. In response, ICE has rejected allegations that detainees are kept in unsafe or inhumane conditions at the facility.
