Executive Order to Assist Foster Care Youth
President Trump signed an executive order on Thursday aimed at aiding young individuals transitioning out of foster care. This initiative aligns with First Lady Melania Trump’s “Be Best” campaign.
This marks at least the second occasion where a president has involved the first lady in signing a document. Although her signature does not change the order’s implementation, it highlights her involvement in its creation. Earlier in May, both signed the Take It Down Act, establishing a federal crime for sharing sexual images of a person, whether real or synthetic, without consent.
The Developing a Future for America’s Children and Families Executive Order seeks to foster public-private partnerships to support youth as they reach adulthood. It also initiates the Fostering the Future program, which includes launching an online platform aimed at allowing individuals from foster care backgrounds to formulate personalized plans that guide them towards self-sufficiency and success.
Trump remarked, “The Bible teaches that one of the measures of a society is how it cares for its vulnerable children and orphans.”
He went on to say, “As we make America great again, we will protect America’s children in foster care and ensure they are never overlooked… They will grow into strong, intelligent, successful, and contributing members of society.”
According to the order, foster youth will gain better access to federal assistance and education and training vouchers. The first lady’s office noted that it will also enhance educational opportunities by promoting the use of scholarship programs that are funded through tax credit contributions for organizations offering scholarships to foster children.
Before the signing, Trump stated that the order would require U.S. businesses and organizations to invest in educating, training, and mentoring young people transitioning out of foster care.
Melania Trump urged both public and private leaders to “join my efforts” and “move beyond mere inaction.”
She expressed hope that this initiative would spark a significant and enduring national movement, saying, “Our collective dedication will create a prosperous future filled with compassion and innovation.”
“Together, we will illuminate the path for today’s foster children, who will become tomorrow’s builders, nurturing America’s future,” she added.
