Trump States Iran Cannot Intimidate U.S. with Strait of Hormuz Warnings

Trump Responds to Iranian Threats in the Strait of Hormuz

President Donald Trump stated that the U.S. will not be “intimidated” following renewed threats from Iranian forces, which have declared a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and reportedly opened fire on multiple ships.

In his address from the Oval Office on Saturday morning, Trump mentioned that his administration is engaged in a “very good dialogue” with Iran. However, he described the Iranian regime’s recent actions to blockade the Strait as them trying to be “a little cute,” especially given their previous agreement to keep the waterway open.

Trump emphasized, “They can’t intimidate us,” and noted that many international shipping companies are opting to reroute their shipments through American ports instead of those in the Persian Gulf to secure energy from the U.S.

He indicated that more information about ongoing negotiations with Iran would be shared later that day.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh mentioned that no date has been set for further peace discussions. He pointed out that the two nations need to establish a “framework” before resuming talks.

“Hopefully, as soon as we can finalize that, we can move on to the next step,” he stated during a forum in Türkiye.

This development follows an announcement from an Iranian military official asserting that Iran will not allow ships to navigate the Strait of Hormuz safely unless the U.S. lifts its blockade on Iranian shipping.

This blockade poses a significant threat to Iran’s economy, with some officials suggesting that it could lead to permanent shutdowns of oil wells due to limited storage space—and halting oil production could severely damage drilling equipment.

On the same day, several ships were targeted, including a container ship that was reportedly struck by an unidentified projectile near Oman, causing damage to some of its containers.

Additionally, there were reports of two merchant vessels being struck by gunfire.

How these latest developments will affect negotiations with the U.S. remains uncertain. However, Trump asserted on Friday that Iran is eager for negotiations and has agreed in principle to move away from its nuclear ambitions.

It’s unclear if these incidents will sway European NATO allies, such as Britain, France, Germany, and Italy, to send ships to the Strait, especially after their peacekeeping mission announcement, which was based on the assumption that hostilities had ceased.

At a Turning Point USA event, Trump expressed skepticism about European support, noting that he only receives calls when the situation seems to be resolving. He remarked, “I told them two months ago that I wanted your help, but now I really don’t want to help them anymore, because they were completely useless when we needed them… But in reality, we never needed them. They needed us.”

Trump further asserted, “If we can tell you one thing, we have to rely on ourselves. We cannot rely on foreign or outside sources.”
