Trump visits Capitol Hill to encourage Republicans on tax cut legislation

Trump Urges Republicans for Major Legislative Action

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump is set to visit Capitol Hill, where he plans to encourage Republicans to deliver on what he calls “big, beautiful bills.”

This visit comes amid a divide among House Republicans: some prioritize cutting deficits while moderates are advocating for tax credits for Americans. Trump emphasized his support for tax cuts in a statement released on Monday, saying, “If we don’t get it, it means Democrats have stopped us. That means people get the largest 68% tax increase in history.”

The House Rules Committee is anticipated to vote on the bill shortly after midnight, following its approval by the House Budget Committee earlier this week.

There are concerns that Trump’s “big and beautiful bill” aimed at restricting abortion providers may incite dissent among House Republicans.

If passed by the House, the legislation will face a potentially more challenging journey in the Senate.

This week, Trump urged lawmakers to “stop talking and get it done” via a social media post.

While Trump regularly participates in weekly meetings with House Republicans, it remains uncertain whether he will engage directly with individual lawmakers who have reservations.

Meanwhile, Democrats are criticizing the proposed legislation, calling it a bailout for the wealthiest Americans. House Democrat leader Hakeem Jeffries voiced his concerns, stating, “They are literally trying to take health care from millions of Americans at this late-night moment. If this law is designed to improve lives for Americans, can someone explain to me why they would hold a hearing to advance the bill at 1 AM?”

According to estimates from a nonpartisan finance watchdog group, the proposed House bill could add roughly $3.3 trillion to the national debt over the next decade.
