Trump’s 10-Day Ultimatum to Putin

President Donald Trump recently reaffirmed his message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, indicating a strict timeline for potential peace agreements and sanctions. “Ten days starting today,” he noted during a flight aboard Air Force One from Scotland.

Trump elaborated, saying, “After that, we plan to impose tariffs and so forth. I’m not sure how much that’ll impact Russia since he seems intent on persisting with the war.” This statement underscores some uncertainty about whether his proposal for imposing hefty tariffs on countries buying Russian oil will change Putin’s strategic thinking regarding the conflict in Ukraine.

Significantly, U.S. imports from Russia have already seen a decline, dropping to $3 billion in 2024, which is a 34.2% drop compared to the previous year. Even though this represents a small portion of Russia’s overall exports, it could still influence their military activities, especially considering that Russia gained about $192 billion from foreign oil sales in 2024.

China and India continue to be major purchasers of Russian oil, hardly shifting their demand elsewhere within this 10-day period. How Trump intends to execute secondary sanctions against these nations remains unclear, particularly as both countries are currently engaged in trade negotiations with the U.S.

Conversations have been happening between U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent and Chinese officials recently, but no concrete trade deal has been finalized. A significant extension of tariff suspensions has been put on hold until mid-August—otherwise, U.S. consumers could face a stark 145% increase in prices for imports from China.

As the clock ticks, Trump’s ultimatum highlights the complexity of the geopolitical landscape and the myriad factors influencing decision-making. The pressure is mounting, and it’s anyone’s guess how this will unfold as the deadline approaches.
