Trump's advisors criticize Pompeo and Cruz for jeopardizing Iran deal talks

Trump’s Peace Deal with Iran Faces Internal Criticism

As President Donald Trump was working late into the night to finalize a peace and denuclearization agreement with Iran, his aides were vocally defending the administration against critics from the right. They accused them of attempting to “undermine” the peace process or, worse, misusing the Remain Security Authorization.

Among the critics were notable figures like former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who received strong pushback from some of Trump’s top advisors. This included a biting response from White House communications director Stephen Chan, deputy counterterrorism advisor Sebastian Gorka, and outside political advisor Alex Brucewicz.

Chan stated bluntly, “Mike Pompeo has no idea what he’s talking about,” expressing frustration on social media. He went further, suggesting Pompeo should “shut his stupid mouth” and allow experts to handle matters. Chan questioned Pompeo’s understanding of the situation, hinting he hadn’t stayed informed.

In response, Pompeo expressed concerns about the potential deal resembling the earlier, problematic policies from the Obama era. He warned that the agreement might effectively appease Iran regarding its nuclear pursuits, which he believes is a significant error.

Pompeo stated, “The emerging deal with Iran seems straight out of a Wendy Sherman, Robert Murray, and Ben Rhodes playbook: Pay the Revolutionary Guards to build a weapons of mass destruction program and terrorize the world.” He emphasized a tougher stance, urging, “Open the damn straits. Deny Iran access to funds.”

While Gorka refrained from directly confirming Pompeo’s claims, he suggested that Pompeo might be “unlawfully” overstepping his clearance by sharing potentially sensitive information. “You have no idea what is being negotiated in secret,” he warned Pompeo, essentially questioning his narrative and urging caution.

Cruz also faced backlash for suggesting that Trump’s measures risked supplying billions to Iran. He voiced his worries about the peace negotiations, labeling the outcomes as potentially disastrous if Iran remains under the control of its current regime and retains its nuclear ambitions.

In this charged atmosphere, some aides, including Brucewicz, expressed their frustrations, with Brucewicz implicitly chastising Cruz. Cruz shot back, claiming that those around Trump seem to be leaning toward “appeasement” similar to Obama’s era.

Interestingly, Senator Rand Paul took a different route, asserting that wars usually conclude through negotiation. He argued that Trump deserves room to maneuver for a solution that prioritizes American interests.
