Division Among Lawmakers Following National Guard Deployment in Los Angeles

After President Donald Trump took the unusual step of federalizing the National Guard, chaos erupted in Los Angeles, leading to stark divisions among lawmakers. This decision, made after 60 years, set the stage for heightened tensions over recent protests against a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation.

Last weekend, the Trump administration organized protests in downtown Los Angeles as a response to the ICE actions. As the situation intensified, anti-ICE demonstrations turned into riots.

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) commented on the escalating violence, stating, “The riots we’re seeing in LA are a direct reflection of the situation.” Many Republicans denounced the chaos, while Democrats criticized the Trump administration for exacerbating the tensions. California Governor Gavin Newsom, viewed as a potential presidential candidate in 2028, led the Democratic backlash against the administration’s response.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also expressed concerns, emphasizing the need for accountability, saying, “We need to be accountable to the administration that has decided to deliberately sort out this mess.” She further noted that the administration was creating chaos with their policies.

Meanwhile, some Democrats intensified their critiques. Senator Alex Padilla attempted to confront Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem during a press conference in LA and was forcibly removed by authorities, prompting rebukes from both sides.

On the Republican side, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) labeled the Democrats’ anti-ICE stance as dangerous, saying, “I’m going to kill someone,” an outburst that certainly raised eyebrows.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., took a different stance, arguing that the protests were mischaracterized and defending the rights of demonstrators. “It’s not anti-ICE; it’s a constitutional right,” she argued, highlighting how the immigrant community has been critical of ICE’s actions for years.

A recent ruling by a federal judge mandated that Trump relinquish control of the California State Guard to Governor Newsom; however, this decision was quickly overturned by an appeals court. The White House defended the president’s actions, asserting that they were necessary to protect federal officials in Los Angeles. “The president has exercised his legitimate authority to mobilize the National Guard to protect lawless situations,” said White House spokesperson Anna Kelly.
