Homeland Security Challenges Democrats Over Access to ICE Facility

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is pushing back against Senator Chris Van Hollen and other Democrats for trying to draw media attention by staging a sit-in at an ICE facility in Baltimore. Van Hollen has been vocal about his support for Kilmer Abrego Garcia, who is believed to be linked to the MS-13 gang.

On Monday, Van Hollen, alongside several House and Senate Democrats from Maryland, went to the Fallon Federal Building, but they were barred from entering the ICE detention facility. The group included four members from Senator Angela Brooks’ delegation as well.

In a video captured outside the building, Congressman Mfume expressed frustration, stating, “Frankly, I expect to be allowed to enter.”

After they were denied access, the lawmakers held a press conference outside. Mfume remarked, “We had to stand outside, knock on the door, and finally sit in front of the door.”

Following the incident, local representative Olszewski took to X, stating, “My Maryland colleague and I were denied entry to the Baltimore ICE Detention Center in accordance with all legal requirements,” asserting that Congress has the right to inspect ICE facilities. He expressed surprise over the denial, emphasizing the need for transparency regarding conditions at the facility.

In response, the DHS released a statement suggesting that if lawmakers wanted to take photos with those they protect, they could arrange tours but under stricter guidelines. Secretary Kristi Noem commented that visits must be requested well in advance, indicating the need to prevent any disruption to the administrative department’s functions.

The statement included a remark questioning how much publicity politicians could gain from connections to alleged criminals, highlighting concerns about safety and enforcement at the facilities. DHS indicated that requests for visits needed prior approval due to recent surges in attacks and political obstructions.

On her platform, Noem shared images of various illegal immigrants charged with serious crimes, stating that these individuals were the “monsters” that Van Hollen was allegedly protecting.

In response, Van Hollen’s office pushed back on social media, asserting that Noem was being misleading. He highlighted that while he supports ICE in targeting serious offenders, a significant portion of those arrested through ICE operations have no criminal history, challenging the agency’s tactics.

Van Hollen further clarified that their intention was not to seek a tour but to execute their essential oversight duties as mandated by law. He critiqued the administration’s shifting requirements, questioning what they might be attempting to conceal.

Fox News Digital reached out to other officials for comments but had not received any responses by the time of publication.
