Trump’s Gaza Peace Proposal Gains Unexpected Support
President Donald Trump’s initiative to resolve the Gaza War has unexpectedly garnered backing from not just Israel, but also various Arab and Muslim nations, as well as the Palestinian Authority, which has previously opposed his proposals.
According to reports, this 20-point plan is designed to fulfill Israel’s objectives of freeing remaining hostages and disarming Hamas, thereby removing the group from power. It also envisions a framework for a Palestinian state. Interestingly, Hamas appears to be aligned with the plan, and the Palestinian Authority has expressed support for its policies and proposed reforms aimed at reducing anti-Israel sentiments.
Should Hamas refuse to comply, the plan allows Israel to proceed with military actions against the terrorist organizations.
Last week, Trump participated in discussions at the UN General Assembly in New York, advocating for collaboration among Arab and Muslim countries. The plan addresses several key Arab demands, including involving the Palestinian Authority in future governance in Gaza, alongside other Arab nations. It also prohibits Israel from annexing Gaza while making no mention of Judea and Samaria (West Bank).
This development has attracted considerable attention. Following a press conference involving Trump and Netanyahu at the White House, foreign ministers from countries like Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Qatar, and Egypt issued a joint statement welcoming Trump’s efforts and expressing a commitment to work with the U.S. to facilitate the implementation of the Gaza Peace Program.
In a noteworthy shift, the Palestinian Authority, which previously rejected Trump’s Middle East peace plan in 2020, has now welcomed this latest initiative, perhaps learning from the experience of the Abraham Accords.
Turkey, which has had a contentious relationship with Israel in recent years, has also shown support for Trump’s Gaza plan.
Currently, Hamas is reviewing the proposal and hasn’t given a definitive response. However, they seem largely isolated, especially with their insistence on rejecting disarmament. Surprisingly, local support for their stance appears to be waning.
Trump’s framework could potentially reignite and broaden the Abraham Accords, setting the stage for regional investments and economic developments, possibly transforming Gaza into a hub akin to Dubai.
