Trump’s Justice Department Sets Record for Illegal Immigrant Prosecutions

During President Donald Trump’s tenure, the Justice Department reportedly reached unprecedented levels in prosecuting illegal immigrants.

According to a recent report, June marked a record month for criminal prosecutions of illegal aliens, with over 3,000 lawsuits filed in that single month.

“If you live and work here illegally, staying in federal prison for two years won’t allow you to do that.”

The Trump administration’s DOJ highlighted that June alone saw more than 3,000 illegal re-entry cases filed. Additionally, there were around 3,200 cases concerning simple illegal entry, a notable number though not a record high. These figures made up more than half of all Border Patrol arrests that month, showcasing an impressive prosecution rate compared to the Biden administration’s approach, which reportedly saw a prosecution rate under 1%.

Data from the Department of Justice revealed that in the first quarter of this year, federal prosecutors filed 7,660 illegal re-entry cases, compared to 4,312 the previous year and 3,670 in 2023.

The DOJ emphasized that it is “utilizing all available investigative and prosecutorial tools” to address “illegal immigrant aggression.”

Jonathan Fahey, who served as a U.S. attorney for Virginia and acted as the director of ICE during Trump’s first term, stated to the Washington Times that these high conviction rates are not just impressive but serve as a strong deterrent to crime.

“They are effective in building confidence, in driving criminals off the streets, and in expediting their removal from the country,” he explained.

Andrew “Art” Arthur, a former immigration judge, shared a perspective on the cycle of deportation and the legal consequences illegal immigrants face, stating: “If I’m deported, I’ll just try again. But I’ve been convicted regarding federal prosecution.”

“President Trump has built the safest borders in national history, and the data proves that.”

The broader impact of the crackdown on illegal immigration was evident, with the US Border Patrol reporting encounters with 6,070 illegal immigrants at the southern border in June. Tom Homan, known as Trump’s Border Czar, noted that the total encounters were significantly lower than during the Biden administration, asserting: “We’ve never seen such a low number.” He added, curiously, that 6,070 people were not released into the U.S.

The White House stated that the number of “Gotaways”—illegal immigrants who avoided detection—was 90% lower than the same month last year. They project that this fiscal year could see the fewest illegal immigrant encounters in half a century.

There’s considerable focus on recent severe immigration infractions, including dismantling major human smuggling operations.
