Trump's Policies Result in the Lowest Number of Illegal Border Crossing Arrests in Fifty Years

Border Security Under Trump’s Administration

The head of the Border Patrol claims that President Donald Trump’s border security and immigration policies have resulted in the most secure border since 1970. During the recently concluded fiscal year 2025, the Border Patrol apprehended over 237,000 individuals who illegally crossed the Southwest border. Notably, for five consecutive months, no illegal aliens were released into the United States’ interior by Border Patrol agents.

Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks shared details on social media, confirming the historic figures initially reported by a news source. He stated that 237,565 illegal crossings were recorded without inspection at the Southwest border. A Department of Homeland Security official suggested that the actual number might be closer to 235,000.

A staggering 70% of these apprehensions—approximately 170,000—occurred in the past three months, coinciding with the current administration’s oversight. Reports indicate that under Trump’s administration, fewer than 70,000 apprehensions were made in the previous eight months.

Historical data shows that Border Patrol agents caught 201,780 illegal aliens in 1970 and 263,991 in 1971. In comparison, this year’s figures, largely attributed to the Trump administration, are significantly lower than those from 1971.

Over the four fiscal years of Biden’s administration (FY21-24), Border Patrol apprehended a staggering total of 7,442,003 immigrants. In contrast, during Trump’s first term (FY2017-2020), only 2,152,655 immigrants were apprehended—this number is less than Biden’s one-year count for fiscal year 2022.

Thanks to new, tighter border security measures implemented by Trump, the average monthly apprehensions at the Southwest border have dropped significantly, from around 50,000 during Biden’s last months in office to under 7,000 in the eight months that followed, according to officials.
