Trump’s representative requests FIFA to swap Iran for Italy in the 2026 World Cup, according to a report.

Reports indicate that President Donald Trump’s special envoy has requested FIFA to consider replacing Iran in the 2026 World Cup, which is set for this summer.

The Financial Times noted that this move aims to strengthen ties between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, a relationship that has been strained by Trump’s comments about the conflict with Iran.

Paolo Zampoli, the U.S. envoy, proposed this idea to FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

“I can confirm that I have proposed to Mr. Trump and Mr. Infantino that Italy replace Iran in the World Cup. I was born in Italy, and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri play in a tournament hosted by the U.S.,” Zampoli shared. “With four titles, they definitely have the credentials to justify a spot.”

The White House did not respond immediately to requests for comments on this proposal.

Italy had an opportunity to qualify for the World Cup but lost a penalty shootout against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the playoff final.

Having previously been World Cup champions, it seems odd that Italy missed three consecutive tournaments after their recent loss.

Italy’s Leonardo Spinazzola expressed the disbelief surrounding their elimination, stating, “This is upsetting for everyone. For us, our families, and all the kids who have never seen Italy play in a World Cup.”

While Zampoli put his ideas forward, Infantino firmly stated that Iran would “definitely” be at the World Cup despite ongoing tensions with the U.S.

“The Iranian team is definitely coming,” Infantino remarked at a recent forum, adding that he hopes for a peaceful situation by the tournament’s start. “They represent the people. They have qualified. The players want to play.”

Infantino visited the Iranian national team during their training camp in Turkey.

All of Iran’s group stage matches are scheduled to take place in the U.S., despite Iranian officials suggesting moving them to Mexico due to travel concerns. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that FIFA declined this request, insisting that the games proceed as planned in venues like SoFi Stadium in California and Lumen Field in Seattle. Iran plans to decide on their participation after FIFA addresses the relocation inquiry.

Iran’s tournament schedule starts on June 16 against New Zealand at SoFi Stadium, followed by a match with Belgium and concluding group play against Egypt.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump mentioned he would welcome Iran’s participation in the World Cup, but expressed concerns about the appropriateness of their attendance given the context. “I truly do not think it is appropriate for them to be there considering their own lives and safety,” he stated.

While Trump seemed unconcerned about Iran’s involvement, Infantino noted that the president had “repeatedly” conveyed his support for the Iranian team’s participation.
