Trump's representative Steve Witkoff to meet with Ukrainians 'this week' – believes there’s still a possibility for a Putin-Zelensky meeting

Witkov to Meet Ukrainian Representatives in New York

Steve Witkov, President Trump’s special envoy, announced plans to meet with Ukrainian representatives in New York later this week. This comes as Russia seems hesitant to engage directly with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Witkov shared with Fox News’ Brett Baier, “I met with Ukrainians this week.” He emphasized the significance of his upcoming meeting, stating, “That’s a big signal,” referring to continued efforts for peace negotiations regarding the conflict.

Trump has been advocating for a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky. Following a meeting with Zelensky and several Western leaders at the White House on August 18th, the Kremlin rejected reports of any presidential level talks taking place with them.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has expressed doubts about Zelensky’s legitimacy as a leader, indicating that direct consultations between Kiev and the Kremlin are unlikely at this time. However, Witkov remains optimistic about the possibility of a bilateral summit.

“We talk to Russians every day,” he mentioned, hinting at the potential for such a meeting. Witkov also noted, “In my opinion, it’s necessary to have this on the table to seal any deal.”

He characterized a recent encounter in Alaska, where Putin allegedly showed interest in peace for Ukraine, suggesting that it still may not be sufficient for Ukrainian acceptance of any proposals. “A peace proposal is on the table,” Witkov affirmed.

He expressed that Trump is “disappointed” with both Ukraine and Russia due to the slow progress in achieving peace. Witkov stated, “He doesn’t believe it’s not his war; it’s a war that needs to go on.”

“I consider it my responsibility to do everything I can,” he continued, emphasizing his role in trying to unite the two sides.

The White House has yet to respond to requests for details about Witkov’s upcoming meeting with Ukrainian officials.
