On Monday, two Israeli hostages being held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip were announced to have been killed: Holocaust educator Alex Dansig, 75, from Kibbutz Nir Oz, and musician Yagev Bukshtav, 35, from Kibbutz Nirim.
Danzig, a dual Polish-Israeli citizen, spent his life building bridges between Polish and Israeli Jews, working at Israel’s famous Holocaust memorial, Yad Vashem. issued A statement mourning his death.
Kibbutz Nir Oz added:
With deep sadness, Kibbutz Nir Oz announced that Alex Dansig was killed after being held hostage in Gaza and subjected to months of torture. His body remains in captivity.
Alex was 76 years old and celebrated his birthday yesterday. He was a member of Kibbutz Nir Oz. He is the father of four children and grandfather of 12 granddaughters and one grandson.
Alex has dedicated his life to educating people about the Holocaust and improving relations between Jews and Poles. He also worked for many years as a kibbutz farmer. He is a dual Israeli-Polish citizen.
Alex will be forever remembered as a man who bridged worlds: from literature and humanism to land and agriculture, from Israel to Poland, from the Holocaust to national rebirth.
