Two Nigerian brothers admit to sextortion scam with more than 100 victims, including Michigan teen who committed suicide

Two Nigerian brothers reached an agreement on Wednesday. To plea bargain For his involvement in an international sextortion scam that led to the suicide of a teenager.

Jordan Demay, a 17-year-old from Michigan, was tricked into sending nude photos of herself on Instagram by a scammer posing as a teenage girl. The scammers threatened to send nude photos to all of his followers, including his friends and family, unless they paid their extortion demands.

In one reported exchange, the Nigerian encouraged Demay to commit suicide after failing to come up with the $1,000 he was demanding.

“I’m going to kill myself right now,” the boy told the scammers.

“Okay,” they answered. “Hurry up.”

Mr. Demay committed suicide in 2022 under pressure from threats.

U.S. authorities worked to identify the fraudsters in Lagos, Nigeria, and in August succeeded in extraditing two suspects, Samuel Ogosi, 22, and Samson Ogosi, 20, to the United States. The two initially pleaded not guilty, but later agreed to a plea deal.

The Ogosi couple agreed to pay compensation to Demey’s family and more than 100 other victims of the fraud. They also pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to sexually exploit a minor.

A third party named Ezekiel Ejehem Robert is accused of carrying out the fraud, and Nigerian authorities are considering an extradition request from US authorities.

Demay’s mother, Jennifer Buta, said: Said WDIV-TV said it hopes this incident serves as a warning to social media predators everywhere.

“What happened today sends a message to people who engage in this kind of behavior online that it doesn’t matter where you are, if you do this online, you can be arrested and held accountable. I hope it really comes across, children,” said the pig.

U.S. Attorney Mark Totten echoed the grieving mother’s sentiments.

In a May 2023 statement, Totten said: “Sexual coercion is a horrific crime that leaves victims, especially young victims, with no recourse and shame. My heart goes out to the family of Jordan DeMay.” Stated.

“While nothing can bring Jordan back, my office is committed to ensuring justice and working with Jordan’s family to send an urgent warning so others can protect themselves and their families. ” he added. “We will travel around the world to hold the perpetrators of these crimes accountable.”

The brothers could be sentenced to a minimum of 15 years in prison and a maximum of 30 years.
