Arrest Made After Shooting Near OpenAI CEO’s Home

Two individuals were taken into custody early Sunday morning in connection with a potential shooting near the residence of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in San Francisco, just days following an unrelated incident where a man allegedly hurled a Molotov cocktail at his house.

The San Francisco Police Department stated that Amanda Thom, 25, and Muhammad Tariq Hussein, 23, were arrested and charged with negligent discharge related to the reported shooting in the Russian Hill area. Interestingly, the press release did not mention Altman’s name or specifically acknowledge the location as his residence.

An OpenAI representative clarified on Monday that these events are unrelated and that there’s no evidence suggesting Altman’s home was specifically targeted.

According to initial police reports, two suspects in a Honda sedan approached Altman’s property around 1:40 a.m. Sunday, firing shots through the vehicle’s passenger window.

Citing police sources, local media noted that the car’s license plate was captured on surveillance footage. Additionally, security staff at Altman’s residence reported hearing gunfire before the suspects fled the scene.

Detectives traced the vehicle to Thom and found both suspects at their home without incident. During the arrest, officers recovered three firearms inside their residence.

San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lue emphasized that crimes involving firearms are treated with the utmost seriousness, stating, “Those who commit these acts will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” He also praised the officers for their swift action in apprehending the suspects and securing the weapons.

This incident followed another alarming occurrence where a 20-year-old man allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s home and made threats against OpenAI’s headquarters. The same individual was later arrested on suspicion of attempting to set fire to a building, with police confirming he was linked to the Molotov cocktail incident.

Though the assailant was not immediately named by authorities, reports indicated his identity as Daniel Alejandro Moreno-Gama. He faces multiple charges, including attempted murder and possession of incendiary devices.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries stemming from either of these unsettling incidents. At this point, police have not disclosed any potential motives for the firebombing attack.

The firebomb incident took place shortly after a detailed investigation was published by The New Yorker, raising concerns about Altman and the company.
