The United Nations is set to add Israel and the Hamas terrorist organisation to a blacklist of countries and organisations that harm children, a move Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has fumed, calling the move “delusional”.
It is the second time in recent weeks that an international body has condemned Hamas and Israel in equal measure, after the International Criminal Court announced it would seek arrest warrants for Israeli officials and Hamas leaders for alleged war crimes during the Gaza conflict.
of The New York Times report:
The United Nations plans to add Israel and Hamas to the list of countries and armed groups that harm children when it publishes its annual report on children and armed conflict, citing the disproportionate toll of the war in Gaza on minors, including killing, maiming and starvation, UN officials said.
Reuters I got it. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is personally responsible for the decision to blacklist Israel, and the UN Security Council is due to review the list next week.
The global list is included in a report on children and armed conflict that Secretary-General Guterres is due to present to the UN Security Council on June 14.
…
Israeli Foreign Minister Katz said the decision “will have an impact on Israel’s relations with the United Nations,” a country that has long been at odds with the UN and whose relations only worsened during Israel’s war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
…
“I am extremely shocked and disgusted by this shameful decision of the Secretary-General,” Erdan said. “The Israeli army is the most moral army in the world, so this immoral decision will only help terrorists and benefit Hamas.”
Netanyahu fired back in a statement on Friday: “The United Nations today joined those who support Hamas’ murderers and added itself to history’s blacklist. The Israel Defense Forces [Israel Defense Forces] It is the most moral military in the world, and no delusional UN decision can change that.”
Israel has a poor relationship with Guterres, accusing him of ignoring allegations that UN officials have links to terrorism. It is called Guterres stepped down a few months ago.
It is unclear how the Biden administration will respond after the report is presented to the U.N. Security Council next Friday.
update: Erdan caused consternation at the UN when he released a video of a phone call with a UN official who had contacted him to inform him that Israel had been blacklisted.
We have received official notification that the Secretary-General has decided to put the IDF on a “blacklist” of countries and organizations that harm children. This is completely outrageous and wrong, as Hamas uses children for terrorism, and in our schools and hospitals… pic.twitter.com/o1civfJFAk

The Times of Israel reported that a UN spokesman described the release of the video of the conversation as “shocking.”
