UN chief blasts Israel for ‘utterly unacceptable’ civilian deaths in Gaza

UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Sunday harshly condemned the Israeli government's actions in the Israel-Hamas war, as the civilian death toll in the Gaza Strip exceeds 25,000.

“Israeli military operations have unleashed massive destruction and killed civilians on a scale unprecedented during my time as Secretary-General,” Guterres said. Sunday's United Nations Summit.

He reiterated his call for an “immediate and unconditional humanitarian ceasefire to alleviate suffering in Gaza, deliver humanitarian aid to all in need, and facilitate the release of hostages.” Ta.

Guterres has repeatedly condemned the Israeli government's actions in the war, which began in early October after Hamas's surprise attack on Israel and escalated into a full-scale military invasion of the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian civilian death toll Reached 25,000 On Sunday, the Gaza Ministry of Health announced that another 60,000 people were injured, most of them women and children.

Israel's military operations in Gaza are viewed by experts as follows: One of the most destructive things in modern history. Much of Gaza City, once the region's largest settlement, has been completely destroyed by months of airstrikes. Israeli forces also targeted dangerous locations such as cemeteries with bulldozers. According to satellite images.

The United Nations said nearly all of Gaza's 2.3 million people have been forced to flee their homes and are in need of humanitarian aid as social infrastructure collapses and disease spreads. Last week, United Nations officials warned of the possibility of mass starvation.

Guterres has been one of the most vocal advocates for a ceasefire in the conflict, which both the Israeli government and Hamas leadership have resisted. A brief ceasefire in November resulted in the release of about half of the approximately 240 hostages held by the insurgents.

The Biden administration is gradually increasing pressure on the Israeli government to reduce its ground invasion of Gaza and provide support for Palestinian civilians. The administration has repeatedly stressed the need for Israel to establish a Palestinian civilian government in Gaza through the Palestinian Authority, a proposal the Israeli government has firmly rejected.

Guterres said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's rejection of a two-state solution was “totally unacceptable.”

“The denial of statehood to the Palestinian people would prolong indefinitely a conflict that poses a major threat to world peace and security,” he said.

As dissatisfaction with the administration's handling of the conflict grows, a growing number of Democrats in Congress are also calling on the Biden administration to take tough action against Israel.
