UN Rejects Aid Offer from Gaza Humanitarian Foundation
The United Nations recently declined an aid transport offer from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), despite claims that Palestinians are facing significant hunger. This decision came on a Wednesday when GHF, which employs private security to facilitate its aid distribution in Gaza, reached out to the UN with a proposal to assist.
In their letter, GHF emphasized their commitment to feeding the people of Gaza. They expressed readiness to coordinate efforts, suggesting collaboration with the UN to help package, transport, and distribute food to those in need. They noted, “We can get started today.”
However, the UN stated that hundreds of trucks filled with aid had not been collected from Israel due to security checks and bureaucratic hurdles, which it cited as the main barriers. GHF contended that the UN lacked the necessary capacity and that drivers were reluctant to work due to fears of looting by Hamas.
In spite of the assistance offered by GHF, the UN spokesperson Stephen Dujarric insisted the organization would not collaborate with them, claiming that GHF’s aid locations posed threats of violence to people attempting to access food. Dujarric had previously acknowledged that Palestinians were indeed reaching out to UN aid sites.
Additionally, reports indicated that the UN, amid its criticisms, described the dire situation in Gaza where the local population is labeled as “hungry for death.” Israel, on the other hand, called such claims a “false warning,” asserting that any hunger issues were manipulated by Hamas.
Both the UN and Hamas appear to view GHF as a challenge to their control over aid distribution, which they believe might undermine Hamas’s influence in the region.
