Illinois Governor’s Controversial Stance on Immigration

JB Pritzker, the governor of Illinois, recently referred to undocumented immigrants as “our neighbors and friends,” raising eyebrows about his priorities regarding state citizens.

In January, he reportedly characterized the enforcement of US immigration laws by President Donald Trump as “unsettled,” which is quite a shift, considering that Democrats have long supported these measures. This sentiment was shared in a Politico article.

Pritzker suggested that Trump’s policies are negatively impacting those who have lived in the country for many years, essentially labeling them as law-abiding individuals, despite their illegal entry.

The governor has also expressed pride in Illinois laws that contravene federal immigration rules. He stated that local law enforcement would support undocumented individuals who are following state laws, which raises questions about the state’s legal stance.

Moreover, in a post on X, he highlighted Illinois’s efforts to train undocumented individuals on how to avoid potential legal consequences for their status.

Pritzker has consistently criticized Trump’s immigration policies, arguing that treating undocumented people this way is an “attack” on Americans, despite acknowledging that these individuals are not citizens.

In response to potential plans to send security forces to Chicago, a city facing significant crime issues, both Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson have voiced their opposition. Pritzker hinted that if military intervention occurs, it might be perceived as an invasion.

He further elaborated on concerns surrounding Trump’s motives, suggesting that there could be ulterior motives beyond merely addressing crime, even going as far as to imply that Trump may attempt to manipulate upcoming elections.

Pritzker described Trump as an “aspiring dictator” and condemned the idea of American presidents threatening urban areas, calling it abnormal behavior.
