United Autoworkers (UAW) praised President Donald Trump's auto rates and thanked him for “stepping up to end the free trade disaster that has been destroying working-class communities for decades.”
On Wednesday evening, Trump announced a 25% tariff on all car imports into the US market. This is a move to protect American employment and manufacturing, which has been ravaged by free trade transactions for more than 25 years.
UAW president Sean Fain, who campaigned for former President Joe Biden last year, welcomed car rates as a key investment in the country's automotive industry.
“We praise the Trump administration for stepping up to end the free trade disaster that has been destroying working-class communities for decades. Ending the race to the bottom of the automotive industry started with a revision of our broken trade deals, and the Trump administration made history with what we do today,” Fein said. statement:
But finishing the race at the bottom means protecting the rights of the powerful National Labor Relations Commission, union of automakers with decent retirements with Social Security benefits.healthcare for all workers, including Medicare and Medicaid, and dignity in and out of work. The UAW and the working class were less concerned about party politics in general. Working people expect leaders to work together to bring results. The UAW was clear: we will work with any politician, regardless of the parties. Someone willing to reverse decades of working class people in the most profitable period in our country's history. These tariffs are a major step in the right direction for autoworkers and blue-collar communities across the country, and are now found in automakers, such as Big 3 to Volkswagen, to get good union jobs back in the US. In a press release, the UAW said that motor vehicle fares could “take back thousands of jobs within a few months.”
“Now, thousands of automotive personnel have been fired at Ford, General Motors and Stellantis to ship jobs to Mexico following a recent decision by automotive executives,” the UAW release states.
Beyond 12 big three car factories, which saw a major decline, Although production has dropped by 2 million units per year over the past decade, the millions of vehicles sold here are made of low-wage, highly exploited workers. This means that car companies that make record profits can further reduce wages for both Mexican and US workers, but Wall Street and corporate classes receive record payments. [Emphasis added]
Already, some foreign automakers have proposed moving production to the US to avoid paying such tariffs. This is the exact goal the Trump administration is looking for.
