US launches airstrikes in response to Jordanian drone attack
The United States has launched a series of retaliatory airstrikes targeting militants in Iraq and Syria following a drone attack in northern Jordan that killed three U.S. service members and injured dozens, according to reports.
The airstrike, reported by the Associated Press and Reuters, comes as Joe Biden on Friday paid tribute to the three U.S. service members killed in a drone strike in Jordan last weekend at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, and spoke to grieving families. This was done when we met up with them.
The attack on Tower 22 was the first deadly attack on U.S. forces since the Israeli-Hamas war broke out in October.
The Iranian-backed Islamic Resistance Movement has claimed responsibility, and the United States has made no secret of its belief that Iran is ultimately responsible. The Iranian government insists it had nothing to do with the attack.
Biden told reporters earlier this week that Iran is responsible “in the sense that it supplies weapons” to Kataib Hezbollah, the most powerful member of the Islamic resistance group. But the president added:
I don’t think we need any more widespread wars in the Middle East. That’s not what I’m looking for.
