Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) is encountering another setback following his surprising defeat in the May primary, as some of his long-time aides have switched sides to work for the Democratic candidate vying to take his Senate seat.
Former Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican endorsed by President Donald Trump, is contesting against Democratic state Representative James Talarico in a crucial midterm election that could impact the future of Cornyn’s position and the balance of power in the Senate.
Jacob Smith, who was Cornyn’s deputy legislative director and policy adviser for five years, has signed on to work with Talarico’s campaign. This development was initially reported by NOTUS and later confirmed.
In a previous runoff, Cornyn lost to Paxton in a fierce political battle characterized by the struggle between the GOP establishment and Trump’s America First supporters.
The general election matchup between Talarico and Paxton in predominantly Republican Texas is among roughly a dozen races that could decide if the Republicans maintain their Senate majority or if the Democrats gain control.
In a surprising twist, Smith chose to support a Democrat instead of joining the Republicans to fill Cornyn’s vacancy. He stated, “I’ve worked for Republicans like Sen. Cornyn throughout my career, and I’m proud to join James Talarico’s campaign this year. Rather than play partisan politics, Talarico responds to the needs of everyday people.” This sentiment reflects a shift in focus, possibly prioritizing common citizen concerns over party loyalty.
While it’s been nearly 40 years since a Democrat won a Senate seat in Texas, there’s a perception of vulnerability around Paxton due to various scandals and ongoing legal challenges he faces. Moreover, Paxton’s personal life has also been tumultuous; he is experiencing a contentious divorce that has included serious allegations.
Smith has not held back in criticizing Paxton, labeling him “the most corrupt and self-serving politician in Texas” who sacrifices public interest for loyalty to major donors.
When reaching out to Paxton’s campaign for a response, no comment was provided at the time of publication.
Despite his recent loss, Cornyn remains committed to supporting Republican candidates, asserting, “I have always supported the Republican ticket, and I will do so again in this general election.”
Smith’s decision to shift allegiance is considered quite unusual and may assist Democratic candidates in connecting with Republicans uneasy with Paxton as their nominee.
Polling data shows Talarico with a narrow lead over Paxton, at 51% to 48% among registered voters. However, Paxton appears to struggle in consolidating Republican support, with only 89% of Republicans backing him compared to nearly unanimous support for Talarico from Democrats.
The Texas Senate race has seen a shift in perception recently, and it has now gone from being viewed as predominantly Republican to a more contested environment.
