Incident at McDonald’s Leaves Employee Severely Burned
On May 30th, a 20-year-old employee at a McDonald’s location in Yuba, California, faced a brutal attack involving hot oil, resulting in serious burns.
The victim, Jacob Smith, sustained burns on various parts of his body, including his face, neck, arms, and back, as reported by NBC News. According to reports, he was in the restaurant’s office when the incident occurred, with the assailant, 23-year-old Jalani Bleuette, fleeing the scene afterward.
Smith’s mother, Amber, shared her concerns, stating to KVUE, “My son is a God-fearing man. If he had $5 in his wallet and someone needed it, he would just give it to them. He has second-degree burns over 22 percent of his body and was in excruciating pain yesterday.”
After fleeing, authorities issued a missing person flyer for the suspect, noting he was considered “at risk due to diagnosis and vulnerabilities.” They have not disclosed specific details regarding Bleuette’s condition.
Bleuette was arrested on June 1 and is currently detained in Sutter County Jail, facing charges that include felony assault with serious bodily injury, felony mayhem, and felony assault with a deadly weapon.
The motive behind the attack is still unclear.
Restaurant owner John Cook confirmed that Bleuette is no longer employed there and expressed concern over the incident, stating, “This serious incident at our restaurant… is deeply concerning, and our focus is on supporting our employee Jacob as he recovers. The safety and well-being of our employees, guests, and community remains our top priority.”
Jacob’s mother also provided insight into his treatment in the ICU, explaining that the medical team is working to minimize the size of his burns and the need for skin grafts, which could lead to further pain.
In support of Jacob’s recovery, a GoFundMe campaign has raised over $146,000 by Tuesday morning. The campaign highlights Jacob’s dedication to building his future, noting, “This unexpected tragedy has caused a major setback at a time when he should have been looking forward to building his life and planning his future.”
