Assault on York College Students During Street Takeover

Several female students from York College of Pennsylvania were brutally attacked by a group of assailants who invaded their off-campus rental home during what appeared to be an illegal street takeover. The incident occurred early Saturday morning while the students were sitting on their porch.

Reports indicate that the students were “dragged by the hair, punched, kicked, maced, and beaten unconscious” in a violent altercation, as detailed in a coverage by a local news outlet.

Three juvenile girls have been arrested in connection with the assault, authorities confirmed on Friday.

One of the students recounted the chaotic scene, stating that after the first punch, a swarm of girls rushed them. “I saw my friend get dragged by her hair down our porch steps,” she remembered, highlighting the confusion and fear of the moment.

The situation escalated quickly, starting when one of the suspects confronted the group outside their home just before 1:50 a.m. The students had asked the onlookers to leave, which prompted the mob to react violently.

One victim noted, “A car involved in street racing crashed into a parked vehicle nearby, and this was the moment when everyone seemed to converge on our property.” They had repeatedly requested that the individuals move away from the house, but that led to the eruption of violence.

Another student described her experience of being caught off guard and pulled from the porch. “I was taken to the stop sign, and I was surrounded by what felt like 12 people kicking me at once,” she stated. She struggled to keep her clothing up while trying to defend herself.

One victim recalled losing consciousness at least twice during the encounter, saying, “I didn’t really know how I got out of it, but I was surrounded by what seemed like 30 people, filming me as I got hit from all directions.”

The students claimed they made multiple calls to the police, who assured them help was on the way before the violence erupted.

However, the York Police were busy attending to a separate SWAT situation at the time, prompting them to call for help from nearby departments after hearing about the altercation.

The police later clarified that they were responding to a sizable gathering of people that resulted in the brawl. At that moment, they were dealing with another critical incident. Despite this, they still monitored the area and spoke with the victims upon arrival.

Officials have not publicly addressed whether the attack had any racial motivations, as the victims were white and some members of the mob appeared to be black.

Street takeovers have become a troubling trend across the U.S. cities, particularly exacerbated during the pandemic. These events, often chaotic and dangerous, usually involve cars performing reckless stunts and are characterized by an anarchic atmosphere intended to be shared on social media.

Earlier in the month, Los Angeles police took significant action against such events using drones and numerous officers, leading to multiple arrests and car impoundments.

Yet, by the time police arrived in York, the crowd had already dispersed. “When we got there, everything had quieted down,” mentioned a police spokesperson.

Authorities have since stated that violence of this nature “will not be tolerated,” acknowledging it as a growing public safety issue across American cities.

A father of one of the victims criticized the police response time, asserting that the incident affected many more people than just the girls involved.

During a press briefing, police confirmed the arrest of three juveniles with charges including rioting, assault, and trespassing related to the off-campus incident.
