Self-described anti-war activists in Chicago cheered on Saturday after learning that Iran had launched hundreds of drones and missiles toward Israel.
Iran launched more than 300 missiles and drones at Israel last week, in an apparent response to Israel’s reported role in an airstrike that killed a senior Iranian official at its embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus. There was a barrage of gunfire.
On Saturday, a group of self-proclaimed anti-war activists gathered in Chicago as a man announced the news of the Israeli attack.
“Twelve days ago, Israel once again violated international law by brazenly attacking the Iranian embassy compound in Syria…and Iran just struck back about 30 minutes ago,” the man told the group. They responded with cheers. “They have been sending drones and missiles, this directly from the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, at specific targets in occupied Palestine, Israeli targets in occupied Palestine.

“Additionally, there are reports of drones being launched towards Israel from Yemen and Iraq,” the man said.
The venue was once again filled with cheers.
“This country and the world needs us,” the man who spoke later called on the group to take action, adding that the United States would “defend the criminal state of Israel.”
Those in attendance booed the idea that the United States was trying to engage with and defend Israel.

“We have to assume that the United States will retaliate against Iran,” he said. “Our anti-war movement, all the anti-war communities here, and all the Palestine support coalitions here must be ready to take to the streets immediately and stop America from escalating its war against Iran.”
Another video shows one of the speakers standing behind a podium and smiling as the crowd can be heard shouting “Get away from Iran! Get away from Iran!”
Israel had been bracing for a possible retaliatory attack by Iran, claiming that around 99% of Iranian weapons fired at Israel were intercepted by advanced defense systems and regional military allies.
Biden last week warned that an Iranian attack on Israel could take place over the weekend, giving the Islamic Republic a single message: “Don’t do it.”

Despite the president’s attempts to rein in the Islamic Republic, Iran carried out a brazen attempt that some Republicans blamed on Biden’s “weakness.”
