Backlash Over Male Cheerleaders in Minnesota Vikings’ Video
The Minnesota Vikings recently sparked controversy after a TikTok video featuring their new male cheerleader surfaced. In this clip, which was initially shared by cheerleader Brianna Putney, she and fellow cheerleader Jenna Kathryn were seen dancing in a bathroom alongside male cheerleaders, Sheikh and Louis Kont.
The social media backlash was swift, with many online expressing their disapproval of the portrayal of both male and female cheerleaders in such a setting. Fox News Digital reached out to the Vikings for comments regarding the situation.
The discussion around Sheikh and Kont intensified, leading the team to issue a statement defending the inclusion of male cheerleaders. Interestingly, the Vikings are not the first to hire male cheerleaders; the Los Angeles Rams set the precedent in 2018, and the Baltimore Ravens have also included men in their cheerleading squads. Just this year, the Carolina Panthers introduced their first transgender cheerleader.
However, the Vikings’ decision has stirred up a national debate. Former Vikings player Jack Brewer and Senator Tommy Tuberville made headlines for their opposition against having male cheerleaders. Brewer stated that this inclusion seems to “manipulate children,” claiming that it influences young boys’ perceptions of gender roles.
He commented, “This is an attempt to manipulate a purely young child and drive the hearts of young children who are harboring this spiritual evil. They teach young boys that it’s okay to hold pom poms, cheer, and act like women.” Tuberville echoed these sentiments, suggesting that fans could respond by boycotting ticket sales due to the team’s stance on gender inclusivity.
Despite the criticisms, the Vikings stand firm in their support of Sheikh and Kont. They expressed pride in having male cheerleaders on their team, noting that men have been part of professional cheerleading at both the collegiate and professional level for a long time. Their statement highlights their commitment to supporting all cheerleaders and the critical roles they play as representatives of the organization.
