Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz stumped the internet Tuesday when he mistakenly said he was “friends with a school shooter” during a debate with Sen. J.D. Vance on the CBS News Vice Presidential Debate. .
The ill-timed incident came as Walz was asked about a change in his position on banning assault weapons, which he previously opposed but now supports.
“I sat in that office with the parents in Sandy Hook. I became friends with the school shooter. I saw it happen,” Walz said.

Walz was probably trying to be friendly with parents who lost children in horrific school shootings, but the internet went wild.
“Mr. Walz's claim that he befriended the school shooter when he was referring to the victims is an innocent misrepresentation. Military rank, drunk driving, in vitro fertilization, Hong Kong Tiananmen “Repeatedly lying about the incident is not innocent misrepresentation,” countered Fox News contributor Guy Benson.
The Media Research Center called it an “unfortunate gaffe.”
Walz's critics were quick to ridicule Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate. Former President Trump asked if Walz was “insane,” and the Trump War Office quickly shared a video of the gaffe, with Walz being told by Trump press secretary Caroline Leavitt that he was “ready to appear on prime time.” “No,” it was declared.

Fox News contributor Andy McCarthy downplayed the gaffe.
“Waltz clearly misspoke. He had no intention of befriending a school shooter. Hey, come on. Given the current climate, this is a good, noble argument,” McCarthy wrote.
Critic John Podhoretz said: “Waltz clearly intended to be friends with parents whose children had been tragically shot. People would forgive him for his false statements. As long as it lasts,” he added.
But journalist Andy Goh called this “the gaffe of the 2024 election” and influential Robbie Starbuck asked, “Hmm…does he want to explain that?”
