Washington Lawmaker’s Apology After Alcohol-Influenced Hearing
A Democratic lawmaker in Washington state has issued an apology, acknowledging that he attended a committee hearing while under the influence of alcohol and made some slurred remarks during the session.
Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon, who serves as the House majority leader, spoke before the House Appropriations Committee on Wednesday regarding the operating budget, labeling the incident as a “serious mistake for a number of reasons.”
“I made a poor decision last night by drinking before my work was done,” Fitzgibbon stated, with the details of the incident being initially reported by a local media outlet.
“I’m disappointed in myself and take full responsibility for my actions. This will not happen again. I am determined to finish this session without alcohol,” he added.
During the hearing, Fitzgibbon discussed the budget but his speech appeared slurred at times.
“I appreciate the contributions from all members of this committee and those in the House who have shared their ideas. The operating budget we’ve proposed serves as a reminder that the people we aim to represent often lack a voice in these conversations,” he mentioned.
In a follow-up statement, he noted that his condition was “detrimental to my work and colleagues” and expressed embarrassment over the situation.
The House Speaker, Laurie Jinkins, acknowledged that, although Fitzgibbon’s behavior did not meet expected conduct standards, he recognized his mistake and has since apologized. She also mentioned that Democratic leaders are looking into measures to support Fitzgibbon’s well-being.
It remains uncertain whether there will be any disciplinary action taken against him.
