Rapid increase in resources

Mr. Abbott increased resources and law enforcement on the southern border as part of Operation Lone Star, an effort to secure the border amid what states say is a lack of federal leadership. The video’s release came on the same day that Texas faced off against the Justice Department in oral arguments before a 5th Circuit Court of Appeals panel over its controversial anti-illegal immigration law.

The law, signed in December, would have allowed local police to arrest illegal immigrants, but has been blocked following a lawsuit from the Biden administration. Texas argued the law was necessary given the record numbers of migrants arriving at the border.

“There have always been people crossing borders,” Attorney General Aaron Nielson told the court. “But before, we were talking about hundreds of thousands of people. Now we’re talking about millions. Before, we were talking about tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors. Now we’re talking about hundreds of thousands. We’re talking about. Before we were talking about a few countries. Now we’re basically talking about all countries.”

The administration contends that Texas’ efforts, such as constructing razor wire and placing buoys in the Rio Grande, impede federal enforcement of immigration law. The Supreme Court temporarily allowed the Texas law to go into effect, but that was blocked hours later by an appeals court’s arguments on the merits of the case.
