Are They Watching “Greying Anatomy”?
It seems the notion that TV could harm our brains isn’t just folklore. Research from the University of Southern California indicates that spending excessive time watching television during middle age might actually shrink your brain, raising the chances of developing dementia and related issues.
This phenomenon, related to television viewing, is explored in a recent study published in the Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia: Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association.
To delve into how binge-watching impacts brain function in midlife, researchers examined data from 1,700 middle-aged adults involved in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study (ARIC), which spans from 1987 to 1989 and focuses on heart and brain health.
Participants, averaging 53 years of age, indicated their TV watching habits on a scale from “never/rarely” to “very often.” They also reported how much time they spent being sedentary.
Fast forward twenty years: the participants underwent MRI scans. The findings revealed that those who watched TV “very often” exhibited significant structural changes in their brains compared to those who reported “never” or “rarely” watching television.
More specifically, regular viewers had reductions in brain areas linked to early signs of Alzheimer’s disease. They also displayed increased white matter hyperintensities, which are associated with cognitive decline. The same group had smaller occipital and frontal lobes, crucial for visual processing and decision-making.
“For years, we’ve focused on how much people sit,” remarked David Reichlen, the study’s senior author. “Our findings suggest that people should also pay attention to what they are doing while they are sitting.”
Interestingly, this significant gap between avid TV watchers and those who watch infrequently held, even after accounting for factors like physical activity, BMI, smoking, and alcohol consumption. It points to the conclusion that both watching TV and prolonged sitting can negatively affect brain health.
Interestingly enough, individuals who spent long hours seated at their jobs tended to have larger occipital and frontal lobes and lower levels of white matter hyperintensity, suggesting better brain health compared to those glued to screens for entertainment.
The researchers noted that this difference likely stems from the mentally stimulating nature of some sedentary activities, contrasting with the more passive experience of watching TV.
Men, in particular, appeared to experience more significant brain changes related to both workplace sitting and television binge-watching, according to MRI results.
However, it’s worth mentioning some limitations of this study. First, participants self-reported their screen habits, which isn’t the most reliable method. Furthermore, since there were no initial MRI scans, tracking brain changes over time was impossible.
While these findings demand more extensive investigation, they nonetheless suggest that health professionals might need to broaden their advice concerning sedentary behavior. As study co-author Natan Fetter noted, changes in guidance could mean emphasizing not just sitting time but also the type of activities being done while sitting, as these seem to impact brain health significantly.
