The Coca-Cola 600, one of the premier events in the NASCAR Cup Series, is here, though it feels a bit different this year. Just a few days ago, NASCAR lost Kyle Busch, a towering figure in racing history. At just 41, Busch, a two-time Cup Series champion, passed away due to severe pneumonia that escalated to sepsis. Remarkably, he had just raced a week prior, securing a victory in the Craftsman Truck Series Ecosave 200.
Charlotte Motor Speedway will still host the races, but in a notable gesture, Busch’s team, Richard Childress Racing, announced that they would retire his No. 8 car until his son, Brexton, reaches the age to compete. Instead, Austin Hill will drive the No. 33 car in its place.
Meanwhile, it’s also the day of the Indy 500, where driver Katherine Legg aims to be the first woman to successfully complete “The Double.” She’ll race in the Indy 500 at 12:45 p.m. ET and is expected to arrive in Charlotte by 6 p.m. for the Coca-Cola 600.
This race is distinct; it begins during daylight and finishes under the lights, covering a lengthy 600 miles over 400 laps, split into four 100-lap stages.
