Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said he believes current law gives the U.S. president the freedom to block immigration. Breitbart News Daily on wednesday.
Chairman Paul of the Committee on Homeland Security described one of the first hearings to be held, called Remain in Mexico.
“And we're going to talk about how we believe that current immigration law gives the president latitude to block immigration, even though no legislation has been passed.” explained.
“Essentially, the law says the president can grant political asylum to immigrants. It doesn't say the president should do that. He said on day one that if they're in the country illegally, they're not eligible for the entire program. “I think it's easy to say that it won't happen,” he said, as border officials cut the razor wire, allowing illegal immigrants to enter the country with ease.
listen:
“And it's a years-long process. So we send them to New York, we house them in hotels, we go through the whole asylum appeals process,” he said.
“We believe that the current law simply authorizes the president to not allow them to enter the country. Don't let them cross the barbed wire. Get them back on the other side of the fence immediately. Return them to the other side of the river and do not initiate any asylum proceedings. “Just say that if you entered the country illegally, you will not be subject to any proceedings,” he said. “We are missing out on opportunities for millions of people.”
“So, we're going to have a hearing on that. We're going to have Ken Cuccinelli, who's a big name in this field, and we believe he's going to be our witness, or at least one of our witnesses. That will be next Thursday,” Paul said, explaining his goal: It will look at “existing immigration laws that are already in the bill” and consider “what President Trump thinks he can do with that bill.”
