Acquitted of Murder Due to Insanity

A man from New York, who has struggled with mental health issues, was declared not guilty by reason of insanity for the murder of his father in an Irish court on Thursday. This case gained attention due to its brutal nature and the man’s prior attempts involving a stranger’s child on a plane.

Henry McGowan, 31, faced charges for the murder of his father, John McGowan, who was 66. The incident took place at a luxury hotel resort in Ireland in 2024. The elder McGowan had traveled across the Atlantic to assist his son during a mental health crisis.

Jurors made their decision after hearing testimonies from witnesses representing both sides. They learned that Henry was experiencing a severe psychotic episode when he attacked his father. He had a long history of mental illness, exacerbated during this incident, as reported.

The fatal altercation happened on November 12, 2024, after John McGowan had flown to Ireland on what was described as a charity mission, prompted by concerns for his son’s declining mental state while in Europe.

Henry, diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2022, had left his passport and belongings at the airport the day before. Instead, he went to a hospital in Dublin seeking medication and then fled to the city center.

Once reunited with his son, John McGowan, who worked in a prominent investment firm, checked them into the Ballyfin Demesne resort in Laois while they awaited a new emergency passport.

In court, it was revealed that Henry had stripped off his clothes in the changing area of the resort’s pool before attacking his father, resulting in a grisly scene.

After the violence, Henry was found in the hotel library. He recounted to authorities that he believed God wanted him to cause harm because his father was pressuring him to take medication.

In a haunting detail, he claimed to have said, “I love you forever,” to his father just moments before the tragedy unfolded.

During the trial, psychiatric experts testified that Henry was likely experiencing schizoaffective disorder at the time. There were also mentions of past incidents where he exhibited troubling behavior, including a notable episode in 2022 when he attempted to abduct a child on a flight to Paris, which led to a stay in a psychiatric facility.

With family by his side in the courtroom, Henry McGowan was sent back to Dublin’s Central Mental Hospital for ongoing treatment. A hearing has been scheduled for February 20, during which a judge will decide on a treatment plan dictated by the court.
