Whoopi Goldberg Addresses Knicks Fans’ Blame on Trump
On Tuesday, Whoopi Goldberg, co-host of “The View,” suggested that viewers should take some responsibility for President Donald Trump’s presence at the recent Knicks game, which ended in a loss for the team.
The New York Knicks played their first NBA Finals game since 1999 on Monday night, shortly after winning two games against the San Antonio Spurs. Trump, a longtime Knicks supporter and New Yorker, was invited by team owner James Dolan to attend the game at Madison Square Garden.
The Spurs took home a victory, winning 115-111. This led to some frustrated Knicks fans protesting on the streets, with a portion blaming Trump for the defeat.
“A lot of Knicks fans, you know, aren’t happy with him right now,” Goldberg commented, referring to the president. She pointed out how the increased security measures for Trump’s visit affected the city, saying, “He came into town and messed everything up, and you couldn’t go. You couldn’t turn left. I couldn’t turn right, I couldn’t cross the street, I couldn’t buy anything.”
She added, “This guy comes along and he’s a fan and, oh my gosh! And they’re blaming him for ending the Knicks’ winning streak last night.” The audience seemed to respond positively to her remarks, but she insisted that the blame should lie with the team rather than Trump.
“Come on, they didn’t play great ball. It was our fault,” Goldberg emphasized, reminding everyone, “We have to reiterate the fact that this man doesn’t have that kind of power.” Co-host Sunny Hostin showed her disapproval with a grimace, to which Goldberg promptly replied, “I see your face, I know how you feel, and you can say what you want. But to say it was his fault we lost means there’s no accountability. They weren’t playing at their best.”
Despite Goldberg’s dismissal of the idea that Trump affected the game’s outcome, Hostin remarked, “For me, it also comes down to the fact that New York had an impeccable atmosphere until the man in orange showed up and put all the bad juju in Madison Square Garden.” She suggested that getting rid of that negative energy was necessary.
Hostin criticized Trump, who was met with boos due to the security costs, asserting, “Don’t bring that bad karma vibe to New York!”
Alyssa Farrah Griffin also weighed in, indicating it might not be the best idea for Trump to attend the game during a successful streak, even while acknowledging his long-standing support for the team, regardless of their performance.
Goldberg further defended Trump’s and Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s right to attend the game, stating, “I think any Knicks fan should come there. You’ve earned your rights as a Knicks fan. I don’t have to like you.” She reiterated, “They were, and still are, Knicks fans, and they’re New Yorkers, and… there’s nothing either of them can do to change what’s going on in this city for this team.”
