Worker burned in UW stadium explosion settles suit for $22M

A worker who was burned in a 2022 explosion during renovations at the University of Wisconsin’s Camp Randall Stadium has settled his lawsuit against the project’s general contractor for $22 million, his lawyer announced.

The settlement of Jeremy Rose’s lawsuit against J.P. Cullen & Sons was reached 10 days before a civil trial scheduled to begin last month in Dane County, attorney Daniel Rothier said Tuesday, the Wisconsin State Journal reported. Ta.

Mr. Rose was working at Murray Roofing, a subcontractor of JP Curren & Sons, on April 13, 2022, when Foreman Karen, along with Mr. Rose and another Mr. Murray, were working under a football stadium. A section of the floor of an enclosed machinery room was dried using a flame torch. Workers were applying flammable material to the floor.

According to court documents, the torch caused an explosion and Rose tried to flee the room, tripping and spilling the primer on her body, causing burns to more than 70 percent of her body. He then underwent surgery and required extensive treatment.

Lottier said Cullen did not follow industry safety standards by not requiring a “hot work” permit before using an open flame torch. Obtaining a permit requires an inspection of hazardous areas by a supervisor.

“For more than 50 years, the construction industry and insurance companies have encouraged the use of hot work permits to improve worker safety,” Lothier said in a statement. “Protecting workers comes at the cost of lives and money.”

As part of the settlement, Mr. Cullen admitted no wrongdoing.
