A Canadian doctor who is due to pay $300,000 due to a court ruling in a legal battle over lockdowns and vaccination mandates has received some help from social media platform X, which has offered to cover the cost.

Dr. Kulvinder Kaur Gill is a physician in Ontario, Canada, specializing in pediatrics and immunology. In the summer of 2020, she took to social media to speak out about the harms of lockdowns and mandatory vaccinations during the pandemic.

As a result, Ms Gill became the target of a smear campaign and the public was encouraged to make complaints about her, according to a crowdfunding page seeking support for the doctor.

Ms. Gill tried to clear her name through legal proceedings against those responsible for her campaign, but lost and was ordered to pay $1.2 million in October 2022.

She appealed the decision and was ordered late last month to pay about $300,000, which is due tomorrow.

Gill could not be reached for comment on this matter from Fox News Digital.

As of Sunday afternoon, a crowdfunding page set up to support Gill had raised more than $190,000, and more than 2,334 people had donated to the cause.

On Sunday, X Corp. announced it was stepping in to help Gill.

The social media platform wrote, “X is proud to assist in the defense of Dr. Kulvinder Kaur Gill against the government-sponsored move to cancel her lecture.”

The post continued to explain Gill’s situation, saying he had spoken out publicly on Twitter (now known as X) against government lockdown efforts and mandatory vaccinations.

She was subsequently harassed by legacy media, censored by Twitter management at the time, and was subject to investigations and disciplinary proceedings.

Ms. X said that when Elon Musk, who now owns the platform, learned about a crowdfunding effort launched to help pay her judgment, she wanted to help.

“X will now fund the remainder of Dr. Gill’s campaign and help her pay the $300,000 judgment and legal fees,” the post reads. “Freedom of speech is the cornerstone of democracy and an important safeguard against all forms of totalitarianism. We must do everything we can to protect it. In X, the right to speak freely I will always fight to protect you.”
