Ukrainian Government Faces New Unrest Post-Resignation

Ukraine’s government is experiencing more instability as Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko stepped down on Sunday. She indicated that President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had proposed a “new important” position for her as he restructured the cabinet during the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Sviridenko shared her resignation via social media, expressing her pride in having led the government during such challenging times for Ukraine. While she mentioned discussing future plans with Zelenskiy, she didn’t specify what her new role would entail.

“I’m ready to serve the Ukrainian state and take on any responsibilities aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s position, safeguarding national interests, and pushing towards a fair peace,” she stated.

In the political landscape, Republican Representative Don Bacon has called for Russia to be banned from the U.N. Security Council and labeled it a “pariah state.”

Zelenskiy, who continues to govern under martial law due to a ban on elections during wartime, described these changes as part of a broader shift in Ukraine’s governance approach. He noted in a social media message that he had invited Sviridenko to oversee “new key areas” in Ukraine’s international relations.

The President announced plans to assign experienced officials to major foreign policy sectors to manage agreements with world leaders and support Ukrainian interests. He also hinted at further personnel changes within top law enforcement but didn’t elaborate on the specifics.

This reshuffle marks Zelenskiy’s fourth significant cabinet change since Russia initiated its large-scale invasion of Ukraine, highlighting ongoing attempts to revitalize his wartime administration.

Sviridenko became Prime Minister in July 2025, at 39, after serving as the economy minister and playing a crucial role in negotiating a significant mineral agreement with the United States, which was seen as a measure to bolster U.S. economic interests in Ukraine and assure long-term security commitment.

Following Sviridenko’s resignation, Zelenskiy convened a meeting with senior officials, including Energy Minister Denis Shmyhal and Interior Minister Ihor Klimenko, suggesting that more government changes might be on the horizon.
